FAQ Regarding Photocromic (Or Transition) Lenses

Posted by on Apr 12, 2016 in Uncategorized |

Photocromic lenses (also called transition lenses) are prescription lenses that are designed to automatically darken when exposed to UV rays. If you are considering buying these lenses, you may have a lot of questions. Here are the answers to some of the most common. Q: What Are Their Advantages And Disadvantages? Answer: Like any kind of prescription lens, photocromic lenses have their ups and downs. Understanding the benefits and negatives of these lenses is crucial. First are the benefits, which include the ways they: automatically adjust to light intensity to protect your eyes. decrease cost of investing in an extra pair of prescription sunglasses. allow you to see well outside and inside. While these are nice benefits, it’s worth pointing out some of the negatives. This will help you balance out whether they are a good investment for your needs: Slow “tinted to clear” recovery time means your glasses are still dark indoors for several minutes When outdoors on a cloudy day, the change in light caused by clouds passing the sun can create blurry vision and be distracting May not be appropriate for eyes that are highly sensitive to UV light Q: Are They As Good As Sunglasses? Answer: The answer here is somewhat complex. Transition lenses do block the UVA and UVB rays of the sun from your eyes and they react by darkening very quickly to bright light in order to offer eye protection. In fact, they depth of their darkening varies depending on the amount of UV rays hitting the lenses. So in many instances, transition lenses can be used in a way similar to sunglasses. However, there are times when you should use normal sunglasses, such as when you’re driving. The reason for that is simple: your windshield block enough UV rays that your transition lenses won’t darken. Q: Are They Similar To Mirrored Lenses? Answer: No, because mirrored lenses (even if they are prescription) don’t change their darkness in UV light. They always stay the same color and the same darkness. However, mirrored sunglasses do block your eyes from light by reflecting much of it away from your eyes. They are especially useful for reducing glare on flat surfaces, such as sand, when you are outside. If you are interested in photocromic lenses, it is worth talking to your optometrist today to get a pair. They might even be able to take the lenses out of your old frame and fit in the new ones to help save you money. For more information, contact a company like Sol...

Tight On Christmas Gift Funds? 2 Affordable Gift Baskets To Please Everyone On Your Gift List

Posted by on Dec 10, 2015 in Uncategorized |

There is no better way to stretch a small holiday gift fund while pleasing everyone on your gift list than by handing out Christmas gift baskets. When gifting baskets, you can impress your recipients with the thought and creativity put into them instead of being like many others who attempt to impress by handing out high-value gifts with less thought put into them. Also, instead of giving each person on your list one present, you can group your recipients together into families and couples and present one basket to each group. Here are some ideas to please every group on your list. Gift Baskets for Couples When making baskets for couples who have no children, first think of a common interest of the two of them or an event currently going on in both of their lives. Are they just moving into their first apartment together? If so, then a basket of small, always-needed household items, like cooking utensils or just a few small pieces of home decor will be appreciated.  Do they have a pet? Most pet owners today appreciate gifts for their pets just as much as they like gifts they can use themselves, considering most pet owners give their little buddies a few holiday gifts.  A basket filled with several types of dog or cat treats and a couple of new pet toys will make any dog or cat owner’s day.  If you are still stumped for ideas, then there are baskets that all couples will appreciate. Consider a basket that contains two free movie passes to a local theater and a box of gourmet popcorn that they can eat while watching movies at home to complete the theme. A bottle of wine or sparkling cider they can enjoy together on a special evening is another easy basket centerpiece, combined with some edibles, like chocolates or shelf stable cheeses.  Gift Basket Ideas for Families Couples or single parents with children are easy to please with gift baskets. The little ones can open it together, and you can even wrap each item included individually to provide a little more gift un-wrapping fun for them. If the family consists of parents (or a parent) with a baby, then there is nothing they likely want or need more than baby items they go through quickly, like baby wash, shampoo, and diaper cream. Add a couple of fun baby toys and a cute set of baby washcloths, and you will please any new parent(s) who has likely already spent a small fortune on those items and will be happy to have more.  When creating a basket for a family with older children or children of all ages, focus your basket around an activity they can enjoy together. Gift them a fun, ice cream sundae night by filling a basket with bottles of caramel and chocolate sauce, fun-colored sprinkles, candy toppings, and a small gift certificate to the local grocery store earmarked to purchase fresh ice cream and whipped topping.  A movie night basket is another great idea, and you can pop in a DVD, several bags of flavored popcorn, and a few bottles of fun-flavored craft sodas. When gifting food items, just be sure to take into account any family member with special dietary needs and make sure to include a...

4 Things To Know Before Buying An Engagement Ring

Posted by on Oct 12, 2015 in Uncategorized |

Buying an engagement ring is something that can be very stressful. You will find yourself looking through many different options and not being sure which option is ultimately the best. However, before you actually begin searching, it’s important that you know about the following things: Certification: Anytime you are considering a ring for purchase, it’s important that you ask for certification. The certification is going to list all the features of the ring, including the diamond, such as what material it is made up of, the carat size, and more. Without this certification, you could be paying more than what the ring is truly worth because the jeweler is providing false information about the ring features itself.  The Metal Types: The two most common metal types for you to choose from would be gold and platinum. Platinum tends to be more expensive than gold, but this is also well worth it so you may consider budgeting for this. This is because a platinum ring is much more durable. The signs of wear and tear won’t easily be seen on a platinum ring, and you can be sure that the diamond will stay in place without falling out easily, as well.  Insurance: Purchasing insurance on a ring is important because you are most likely spending a great deal of money for the ring. Without insurance, if you lose the ring, then you lose everything you have put into the ring, as well. This can be even more upsetting if you are making payments on the ring. In some cases, you will have to continue with these payments even if you don’t have the ring.  Engraved Number: Numbering the ring you purchase is also something that you should be budgeting for. This is because by engraving a small number in the ring that is only identifiably underneath a microscope will give you further peace of mind. If the ring is lost and someone tries to sell it to someone who checks the number, they can determine whether or not it is a stolen ring.  By knowing these four things about purchasing an engagement ring, from a location like Highglow Jewellers Ltd jewellery, you can better understand what you should be budgeting for. This is going to also give you a better idea about what price ranges to look at so that you don’t end up buying ring that is too expensive leaving you unable to purchase the insurance and other protection that you...

Order A Beer You’re Not A Fan Of? Two Recipes To Use It Up

Posted by on Aug 5, 2015 in Uncategorized |

When you take a risk and order a beer you’ve never tried before, sometimes you end up with something that’s not exactly in line with your personal preferences. It’s not that it’s a bad beer — it’s just not what you prefer to drink. But don’t let it go to waste! Here are two simple recipes that will help you use it up. Beer Basted Chicken Beer adds moisture and flavor to this delicious roasted chicken recipe. If you’re serving a big group, you can easily double the recipe and make 2 chickens, since the recipe only calls for 6 ounces of beer. Ingredients: 1 whole chicken, 3-4 pounds 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 2 tablespoons melted butter 6 ounces beer Preheat the oven to 375 F. Place the chicken in a roasting pan. Drizzle it with the melted butter, and then sprinkle on the salt, pepper, poultry seasoning and garlic powder. Place the chicken in the oven, and roast for 1 hour. Pour the beer over the chicken, and continue to roast, using a baster to suck the beer and drippings up from the bottom of the pan and drizzle them over the chicken every few minutes. Roast until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. Let it rest for 20 minutes before carving. Beer and Beef Stew Beef stew is traditionally made with dark beer, but there’s no reason you can’t make it with a lighter lager or IPA. The flavor will just be a bit lighter. This hearty stew recipe serves 4 and is simple to toss in a pot and let simmer away. Ingredients: 1 12-ounce beer 1 pound beef stew meat 1/2 cup tomato sauce 2 cups beef broth 2 tablespoons flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped 1 medium onion, sliced 2 medium carrots, cut into chunks 2 medium parsnips, cut into chunks 3 medium potatoes, cubed Cut the beef into 1-inch cubes. Toss them in the flour, salt and pepper. Heat the olive oil in a Dutch oven, and then add the beef to the pan, a few cubes at a time. Toss the beef around until it is nicely browned, and then add the remaining ingredients, except for the vegetables, to the pot. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. Add the veggies to the pan, cover, and cook for another hour before serving. Before you throw out the case of beer you didn’t enjoy, try these options so that it doesn’t go to waste, and rest assured knowing that you can always order your favorite beer again and have it delivered to you from alcohol delivery companies, like Good Cheer Alcohol...

Military Equipment Can Help On Hikes And Camping Trips

Posted by on May 4, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Military surplus stores sell a lot of cool equipment and memorabilia, but how much of it is really practical to the civilian? If you’re a military goods collector who also enjoys the outdoors, there’s a few pieces of equipment that could make your hikes, camping and general outdoors adventures a bit more convenient. All Boots Are Not Created Equally Military combat boots are a critical part of the uniform, but there are different features that are useful for different types of terrain. A popular boot type is the basic black boot used by Army, Air Force and Navy personnel. The boot is general use, dark and with rubber soles. There is also a steel plate over the toe that can protect against dropping–don’t expect it to help you with stubbing your toe, that still hurts just as much. The standard black boot isn’t the best for all outdoor excursions, however. They are good protection and water resistant, but if you’re in an especially muggy area, you may have to deal with overheating feet. Hot weather boots (generally in brown, desert-like colors) feature materials that are designed to transfer heat more efficiently.  You may be tempted to get boots with holes bored into some of the sides, but there are not for standard military use. The ‘breathing holes’ are good for keeping foot temperatures down, but the water-resistant capabilities may be severely reduced. Water Canteens And Accessories Water canteens are well known for their survival applications, but there are a few things that you could get that can make survival even more successful. You may have seen canteens that have some sort of hole or port on the top. These holes are used to connect hoses, which can be attached to gas/chemical attack masks. In many chemical attack drills, it may be necessary to drink even during a long-term chemical exposure event. The hose plugs into the canteen to create a relatively secure suction connection. Unfortunately, there is no single standard connection type. The concept is still experimental and highly situational, so you’ll need to find masks or drinking hoses that are compatible with the canteen in use. In some cases, hydration pack manufacturers will sell caps or adapters to make the canteen work with their accessories. If at all possible, make sure to purchase the canteen, hydration pack and accessories through the same brand line. It isn’t always required and may not be a life or death situation, but a set of connections simply work together when designed from the same mold. Contact a military goods professional if you need help pairing different parts together. For more information, contact Things Military Ltd. or a similar...

Electrical Supplies And Tools You Will Need For Home Wiring Projects

Posted by on Mar 18, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

There are both general and specific tools and supplies you will need for home electrical projects. Many of the tools will be used for nearly every project. Supplies may be bought separately for each project, because some supplies, especially electric wire, is expensive. Tools you will need for wiring projects The tool you will need for most electrical projects is the wire stripper/cutter.  This tool will cut lengths of electric wire to size. More importantly, it will also strip the insulation jacket that holds bundles of wires together, as well as strip the insulation from each individual wire in a bundle without nicking or otherwise damaging the wire. This is accomplished by placing different thicknesses of wire through sized openings in the blades of the stripper. The blades will only close on the wire sufficiently to cut the insulation, leaving the wire untouched. Tools you will need for specific electrical projects include: Voltage tester. This simple tool can determine if electric power is still flowing to an outlet or other device. It is used as a safeguard against electric shock and may consist of metal prongs that are inserted into outlets, or no-touch varieties that detect electric current without physical contact. This tool is useful for checking or replacing outlets. Wire fish tape. This tool is used to pull wire through existing walls and ceilings. It is not actually a tape, but a thin flat metal cable wound on a fishing type reel that can be used to retract the cable after it is “fished” through a wall and a wire is attached. The wire is then pulled through the wall. A fish tape is only needed if you are adding an additional line or expanding a present one. Electrical supplies you will need for home projects Some supplies, such as electrical tape and wire nuts, which are used to both connect and protect electric wires, are inexpensive and can be kept for many different future projects. Other supplies are more specific, such as: Outlets. Regular outlets can be used for normal household use, while only GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets can be used in wet locations such as bathrooms or outdoors. Wire. Fourteen gauge wire is sufficient for fifteen amp circuits, but twelve gauge wire must be used if you intend to install or extend a twenty amp line. Heavy duty thirty amp lines, for electric dryers and stoves, will require eight gauge wire. Buy wire specifically for each project. If you’re not sure what supplies you’ll need for your current project, visit a store like Raymar Electrical Sales to get some...

Are You Saying It With Flowers? The Victorians Started That Fragrant Tradition

Posted by on Jan 9, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

In the days of Queen Victoria, sending flowers was a somewhat clandestine means of communication. It allowed lovers, friends and possible suitors to skirt the strict protocols of male and female interaction. The following is an explanation of how the Victorians “said it with flowers.” Victorian Etiquette Romancing a loved one in the Victorian age meant doing so with chaperones and others watching your every move. Having a simple conversation with someone of the opposite sex wasn’t an easy proposition, no matter how “up and up” that conversation might be. The upper classes were the most restrictive. Even formally engaged couples weren’t allowed out without a chaperone. Sneaking out and getting caught meant bringing disgrace upon both families. The answer was to send flowers to express emotions and intentions. That, along with subtle glances, would have to do until the wedding night. Courtship Flowers Sometimes entire courtships would be carried out by sending flowers back and forth.Ladies did not dare start a romance in that era, so the man would send red flowers, usually roses, if he were truly smitten. If he was somewhat fond of the lady, he would send pink, showing affection but no commitment. The lady, if interested, would send a single flower back, usually pink. Red was considered too forward. If either party sent the other a yellow carnation, the “courtship” was over. This was the Victorian equivalent of breaking up by text message. Testing the Waters Before a man would go so far as to send those red or pink flowers, he might test the waters by sending other blooms. In that era, he couldn’t just go up to a woman and tell her she was beautiful. White daises implied he thought she was lovely and sweet. Gilly flowers, similar to carnations, were often sent to older ladies, perhaps on a birthday or anniversary, reminding them they were still lovely. Beyond Courtship Flowers were sometimes sent to deliver unpleasant messages, sort of the Victorian version of hate mail. If you get caught in a lie, you might have a snapdragon delivered to your doorstep. A sunflower meant you were acting uppity, while a hydrangea signaled you were cold and heartless. If someone thought you were a bit crazy, you might just have a basket of nuts delivered. The Victorians may not have had cell phones or email, but their back and forth floral messaging system worked quite nicely. In a way they started a practice that continues on today. 5 Qualities Of A Good Cigar

Posted by on Dec 9, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

For those initiated into their pleasures, cigars are one of the great joys of life. Yet curious outsiders often have a difficult time learning just what makes a cigar good. If you have found yourself wishing you knew more about the art of selecting a quality cigar, despair not. This article will introduce you to five key qualities of a good cigar.  1. The Wrapper No single factor impacts the overall impression made by a cigar as much as its outermost layer, also known as the wrapper. A general rule of thumb is that the lighter the wrapper, the milder the cigar. Likewise, a darker wrapper indicates a more full-bodied cigar. Regardless of its color, all good wrappers should: Be smooth and unblemished, without any unsightly veins Not be too dry Not come unraveled as you smoke Never flake or crumble Even Burning A well constructed cigar will burn evenly and smoothly from the first puff to the last. As you continue to learn more about cigars, you will be able to tell how evenly a cigar is rolled just by drawing on it. But for beginners, there is also a more objective way to tell: by inspecting the ash. A well-rolled cigar will generate a firm ash that can easily grow up to an inch in length before falling. Properly Aged Tobacco quality is a huge part of what makes a cigar good. But even high quality tobacco won’t produce a good cigar unless it has been properly aged. A few of the more common signs that a cigar’s tobacco has not been properly aged are: a harsh or bitter taste on the lips, tongue, or mouth a feeling of heartburn in the chest a cigar that won’t stay lit Mouth Feel All cigars possess a quality which cigar aficionados sometimes refer to as mouth feel. A cigar with a good mouth feel will be firm and resilient, though not rock hard. No matter how much time it spends in your mouth, it should not become excessively soft or spongy. These are two tell-tale signs of a poorly constructed cigar. Consistent color Certain qualities of a good cigar only become apparent when inspecting an entire box of cigars. Consistency of color is one of these. If you purchase a box of cigars only to find the cigars inside are varied in color, this is a sign that a manufacturer is not following high standards of consistency. Likewise, a given brand and style of cigar should always taste and behave the same–no matter how many boxes you smoke! Learn more at, Willow Park...
